AudioSolutions Virtuoso M Floorstanding Loudspeaker

The AudioSolutions Virtuoso M is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker positioned between the Figaro and flagship Vantage 5th Anniversary series. It incorporates a number of technologies developed for the Vantage line, including AudioSolutions’ Box-in-a-Box cabinet construction, self-locking enclosure, mini-horn loaded tweeter and extended-band midrange.

The Virtuoso M uses a 3cm silk-dome tweeter, 16.5cm Hard Pulp paper-cone midrange and a pair of 19cm Hard Pulp bass drivers. The three drivers operate through crossover points at 500Hz and 7kHz, allowing the midrange driver to cover nearly four octaves of the audio spectrum.

Three-Way Driver Configuration

The Virtuoso M is designed around a wide-band midrange rather than placing a crossover in the region where human hearing is most sensitive. The 16.5cm midrange operates from 500Hz to 7kHz, keeping the 1–2kHz region largely within a single driver.

The bass section uses two 19cm Hard Pulp paper-cone drivers, while a 3cm silk-dome tweeter handles the upper frequencies. The result is a three-way architecture with relatively low crossover points between the major drivers.

Adjustable Harmonics Crossover

AudioSolutions equips the Virtuoso M with its Adjustable Harmonics Crossover, which provides three different crossover configurations. The system changes the crossover points and slope characteristics rather than simply changing the output level of individual drivers.

Three listening profiles are available:

  • Balanced – the standard setting, balancing clarity and soundstage presentation
  • Moderate – intended for longer listening sessions with a less pronounced and more relaxed presentation
  • Enhanced – emphasizes fine detail and is particularly suited to quiet listening environments

This gives the listener three different presentations from the same speaker without altering its basic frequency-response level.

Box-in-a-Box Cabinet

The Virtuoso M uses AudioSolutions’ true Box-in-a-Box cabinet construction. A heavily braced internal skeleton provides the primary structural support and controls vibrations generated by the drivers.

A lightweight inner cabinet is built around this structure, followed by a denser outer cabinet. The two structures work together to reduce stored energy and cabinet resonance. AudioSolutions uses carefully calculated joints and cabinet geometry to further increase rigidity.

The approach is intended to provide the stiffness associated with more exotic cabinet materials while avoiding the high-frequency ringing that can accompany very rigid metal or composite enclosures.

Multi-Layer Cabinet Construction

The cabinet uses walls of varying thickness and density rather than a uniform enclosure structure. Different materials and thicknesses have different resonant characteristics, allowing mechanical energy to be dissipated across the cabinet rather than concentrated at a single resonance.

A thin 0.1–0.15mm polyurethane adhesive layer between cabinet materials further helps absorb mechanical energy. The varying thickness of the side panels, front baffle and rear section also contributes to differential vibration damping.

Extended-Band Midrange

The 16.5cm midrange driver covers 500Hz–7kHz. AudioSolutions developed this extended-band approach to avoid placing crossover points in the particularly sensitive 1–2kHz region of human hearing.

Keeping the majority of the critical midrange within a single driver reduces the interaction between drivers through this part of the spectrum and helps maintain consistent tonal character through vocals, acoustic instruments and much of the musical fundamentals.

Mini-Horn Loaded Tweeter

The 3cm silk-dome tweeter uses a mini-horn loading system designed to improve the transition between the tweeter and the surrounding cabinet while controlling its dispersion characteristics.

High Sensitivity, 4-Ohm Design

With a sensitivity of 92dB at 2.83V/1m, the Virtuoso M is relatively easy to drive for a large high-end three-way speaker. Its nominal 4-ohm impedance and 170W RMS power handling make it suitable for a wide range of high-current integrated amplifiers and separate power amplifiers.
