The AudioSolutions Virtuoso S is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker developed using technology from AudioSolutions' flagship Vantage 5th Anniversary series. It combines a heavily braced Box-in-a-Box cabinet, a wide-band midrange driver, mini-horn loaded silk-dome tweeter, dual bass drivers, and a user-adjustable crossover system that provides three distinct listening profiles.

The Virtuoso S is designed around a 13.2cm Hard Pulp paper-cone midrange driver that operates from 500Hz to 7kHz. By keeping the midrange driver responsible for nearly four octaves of the most sensitive portion of the musical spectrum, AudioSolutions minimizes the use of crossover points through the 1–2kHz region where human hearing is particularly sensitive to tonal differences between drivers.

With 91.5dB sensitivity and a nominal 4Ω impedance, the Virtuoso S is designed to work with a broad range of high-quality amplification while providing the dynamic capability expected from a full-size high-end loudspeaker.

Three-Way Driver Configuration

The Virtuoso S uses a 3cm silk-dome tweeter, a 13.2cm Hard Pulp paper-cone midrange driver, and two 16.5cm Hard Pulp paper-cone bass drivers.

The 13.2cm midrange driver is the centerpiece of the design. Rather than crossing the midrange and tweeter in the conventional 1–2kHz region, AudioSolutions extends the midrange's operating range from 500Hz to 7kHz. This keeps the most critical midband information within a single driver and places the crossover points farther away from the region where the human ear is most sensitive to tonal inconsistencies.

The bass-to-midrange crossover occurs at 500Hz, while the midrange-to-tweeter crossover is set at 7000Hz.

Extended Band Midrange

AudioSolutions' Extended Band Midrange concept is designed to keep the majority of the essential musical information within one driver. The Virtuoso S midrange covers approximately four octaves, from 500Hz through 7000Hz.

This approach is intended to reduce the audible interaction between different drivers through the highly sensitive 1000–2000Hz region. Vocals, acoustic instruments, strings, brass, and much of the harmonic structure of music remain within the operating range of the midrange driver rather than being divided between the midrange and tweeter.

The result is a crossover topology designed around driver behavior rather than simply dividing the audible spectrum into conventional frequency ranges.

Adjustable Harmonics Crossover

One of the most distinctive features of the Virtuoso S is its Adjustable Harmonics Crossover. The speaker incorporates three different crossover profiles that allow the listener to alter the character of the speaker without simply changing the output level of individual drivers.

The three profiles are:

Balanced – Designed as the default setting, providing a balance between musical clarity and soundstage immersion.

Moderate – Intended for longer listening sessions, with a somewhat less dramatic presentation.

Enhanced – Emphasizes the finest level of detail from recordings and is particularly suited to lower-volume evening listening when ambient noise is reduced.

The three settings alter crossover frequencies and slope characteristics, changing the way the natural harmonic content of the individual drivers contributes to the overall presentation.

Box-in-a-Box Cabinet

The Virtuoso S uses AudioSolutions' true Box-in-a-Box cabinet construction. Rather than relying on a conventional single enclosure with internal bracing, the cabinet incorporates a heavily reinforced internal skeleton surrounded by a lightweight inner enclosure and a separate outer enclosure.

The internal structure provides substantial rigidity and controls the primary mechanical vibrations generated by the drivers. The lightweight inner walls have low mechanical inertia and are designed to minimize stored energy.

The outer cabinet is constructed from denser, higher-loss materials and works together with the inner enclosure to dissipate unwanted mechanical energy. The two structures effectively damp one another, reducing cabinet resonances without introducing the high-frequency ringing that can occur with some extremely rigid cabinet materials.

Multi-Layer Cabinet Construction

The cabinet uses multiple layers of materials with different thicknesses and densities. Each layer has its own resonant characteristics, allowing mechanical energy to be distributed and dissipated rather than concentrated at a single resonance.

A thin polyurethane adhesive layer between the materials also contributes to the damping system. AudioSolutions specifies a layer thickness of approximately 0.1–0.15mm, which helps transfer mechanical energy from the cabinet structure into heat.

The cabinet walls also vary in thickness around the enclosure rather than maintaining a uniform cross-section. This differential construction further reduces the ability of the cabinet to develop strong resonant modes.

Mini-Horn Loaded Tweeter

The Virtuoso S uses a 3cm silk-dome tweeter integrated into a mini-horn loading system. The waveguide helps control the tweeter's dispersion and improves its integration with the unusually high 7kHz midrange-to-tweeter crossover point.

The silk dome provides the high-frequency extension required for the speaker's 30kHz upper frequency specification while maintaining the tonal characteristics associated with a soft-dome design.

Hard Pulp Paper Drivers

The midrange and bass sections use Hard Pulp paper-cone drivers. The Virtuoso S employs one 13.2cm midrange driver and two 16.5cm bass drivers.

The paper-cone construction is intended to provide a natural balance of stiffness, damping, and low stored energy. Using the same basic cone material throughout the midrange and bass sections also provides a consistent tonal character between the drivers.

High Sensitivity and 4Ω Impedance

The Virtuoso S has a sensitivity of 91.5dB at 2.83V/1m and a nominal impedance of 4Ω.

The speaker is rated for 130W RMS nominal power handling, with a maximum unclipped power handling of 260W. Its combination of relatively high sensitivity and substantial power handling allows the Virtuoso S to produce high acoustic output while retaining significant dynamic headroom.
