The Marantz AV 20 is a reference-level AV preamplifier and processor designed for high-performance home theater systems that use separate power amplification. With 13.4 channels of processing, fully balanced outputs, four independent subwoofer outputs, HDMI 2.1 connectivity, and support for the latest immersive audio and video formats, the AV 20 provides the processing and control needed for a serious custom theater system.
 
Marantz combines its HDAM discrete circuitry, current feedback topology, a toroidal power transformer, copper-plated chassis, and carefully selected components to provide a clean and controlled signal path. The AV 20 is designed to pair particularly well with Marantz's AMP series power amplifiers, including the 12-channel AMP 20.
 
13.4-Channel Processing
The AV 20 supports up to 13.4 channels of processing for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced, 360 Reality Audio, and MPEG-H formats. Its 13.4-channel architecture provides enough processing capability for large immersive theater layouts while maintaining flexibility for different speaker configurations.
All processed channels are available through both RCA and XLR preamp outputs. Four independent subwoofer outputs, also available in RCA and XLR, allow each subwoofer to be managed independently for more precise bass integration and room correction.
 
HDMI 2.1 and 8K Video
Seven rear HDMI inputs support HDMI 2.1 features including 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz video, with bandwidth up to 40Gbps. The AV 20 can also scale 1080p and 4K sources to 8K and supports HDR10+, HDR10, Dynamic HDR, HLG, and Dolby Vision.
 
Gaming features include Variable Refresh Rate, Quick Frame Transport, and Auto Low Latency Mode. HDMI eARC provides a high-bandwidth connection for compatible displays, while three HDMI outputs allow the processor to feed multiple displays or zones.
 
Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and Dirac Live
Audyssey MultEQ XT32 provides automatic room correction using the included calibration microphone. Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume, and Audyssey LFC provide additional options for managing listening levels, bass response, and low-frequency content.
 
The AV 20 is also Dirac Live upgradeable, giving advanced users the option to move beyond the included Audyssey platform and apply Dirac's room correction and optimization tools.
 
HDAM and Reference Construction
The AV 20 uses Marantz HDAM SA3 discrete circuitry along with a current feedback topology and clock jitter reduction. A toroidal power transformer and copper-plated chassis are used to help maintain a stable, low-noise operating environment.
 
The fully balanced signal architecture is particularly useful in systems with long cable runs between the AV processor and separate power amplifiers. Gold-plated RCA connections, a metal front panel, and Marantz's distinctive porthole OLED display complete the construction.
 
HEOS Streaming and Multi-Room Audio
Built-in HEOS provides access to network streaming services including TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer, Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, and more. The AV 20 supports high-resolution FLAC, ALAC, and WAV files up to 192kHz/24-bit, along with DSD streaming at 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz.
 
HEOS also provides multi-room functionality, allowing compatible Marantz and HEOS products throughout the home to be controlled from the same app. The AV 20 is Roon Ready and supports AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth.
 
Custom Installation
The AV 20 is designed with custom installation in mind, with IP, RS-232, web, app, IR, and Marantz Remote Bus control. Three DC trigger outputs are available for controlling connected equipment. Control options and extensive input/output flexibility make it well suited to dedicated theaters as well as complex whole-home entertainment systems.
