The Marantz CINEMA 40 is a reference-level AV receiver designed for serious home theater systems that need substantial amplification, advanced surround processing, and modern HDMI connectivity in a single component. It combines nine channels of Class A/B amplification rated at 125 watts per channel with 11.4 channels of processing, allowing the CINEMA 40 to support larger immersive speaker layouts and external amplification when needed.
Built in Shirakawa, Japan, the CINEMA 40 incorporates Marantz's current feedback topology, discrete amplifier design, HDAM circuitry, Audyssey MultEQ XT32, Dirac Live upgradeability, HEOS streaming, and seven 8K-capable HDMI inputs. It also provides 11.4-channel preamp outputs and four independent subwoofer outputs for systems that may eventually expand beyond the receiver's nine powered channels.
9.4 Channels of Class A/B Amplification
The CINEMA 40 uses nine discrete Class A/B amplifier channels, rated at 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms from 20Hz to 20kHz with two channels driven. Current feedback topology and a discrete amplifier design give the receiver the flexibility to handle a wide range of home theater speaker systems.
The receiver has 11 speaker terminals, allowing the powered channels to be assigned for different system configurations, including bi-amping. The additional processing channels can be powered externally through the 11.4-channel preamp outputs when a larger theater requires more amplification.
11.4-Channel Processing
The CINEMA 40 processes up to 11.4 channels and supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS:X Pro, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced, 360 Reality Audio, and MPEG-H. Four independent subwoofer outputs provide greater flexibility when integrating multiple subwoofers into a larger listening room.
Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and DTS Virtual:X are also supported for systems that don't use a complete physical height-speaker configuration.
HDMI 2.1 and 8K Video
All seven HDMI inputs support 8K video, with HDMI 2.1 connectivity for 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz sources. The CINEMA 40 supports 1080p and 4K upscaling to 8K and includes three HDMI outputs, with the main output supporting eARC.
HDR10, HDR10+, Dynamic HDR, HLG, and Dolby Vision are supported, along with gaming features such as Auto Low Latency Mode, Variable Refresh Rate, and Quick Frame Transport.
Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and Dirac Live
Audyssey MultEQ XT32 provides automatic speaker calibration and room correction using the included microphone. Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume, and Audyssey LFC provide additional control over listening levels and low-frequency content.
The CINEMA 40 is also Dirac Live upgradeable, giving users the option to apply more advanced room correction and optimization. The receiver includes adjustable crossover settings and bass management tools for integrating multiple speakers and subwoofers.
Marantz Engineering
The CINEMA 40 uses a discrete amplifier design with current feedback topology and a carefully selected power supply. Marantz's HDAM circuitry is used in the analog signal path, while the chassis incorporates a substantial metal construction and the distinctive Marantz porthole display.
Pure Direct mode provides a more direct signal path when desired. The receiver also includes a phono MM input, five analog inputs, two optical inputs, and two coaxial digital inputs, making it suitable for both modern home theater sources and traditional two-channel components.
HEOS High-Resolution Streaming
HEOS Built-in provides access to Qobuz, TIDAL, Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, TuneIn, and other streaming services. The CINEMA 40 supports high-resolution network playback and can also function as part of a multi-room HEOS system.
Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth provide additional options for music playback. Network playback supports FLAC, WAV, and ALAC files up to 192kHz/24-bit, along with DSD at 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz.
Custom Installation
The CINEMA 40 includes IP, RS-232, web, app, IR, and Marantz Remote Bus control. Control4, OvrC, and Josh.ai compatibility make it suitable for integration into professionally installed home automation systems.
Three zones provide additional flexibility for whole-home audio and video, while the receiver includes three DC trigger outputs for controlling external amplifiers and other connected equipment.
